Harmonics of Sound is an interactive exploration of how a single fundamental tone unfolds into a structured field of harmonic relationships. Through sound, geometry, interference, and visualized wave patterns, the experience guides the visitor from the simplicity of one frequency into the greater complexity of resonance and harmonic form.
The particle was designed to move progressively from understanding to experience. Visitors can explore the harmonic series, combine tones into a living sound field, observe geometric relationships, examine constructive and destructive interference, and consider how vibration is received through the human instrument. The final stage turns inward, inviting conscious listening, observation, and reflection.
At its core, the experience presents sound not merely as something heard, but as an ordered relationship of frequency, proportion, vibration, and perception, a foundation for the wider exploration of the Harmonics of Being.
Harmonics of Sound
Begin with a single fundamental tone and observe how the harmonic series unfolds from it.
The Fundamental
Every harmonic series begins with a fundamental frequency. This tone establishes the reference from which the higher harmonics are derived.
Begin at a comfortable system volume. Audio is generated locally in your browser.
The Harmonic Series
Each harmonic is an integer multiple of the fundamental. Select a harmonic to see its relationship and, if desired, hear it as a pure sine tone.
This stage presents the mathematical harmonic relationship only. Timbre emerges when multiple harmonics are combined; that comes in Stage 3.
Build the Harmonic Field
Activate several harmonics and listen to how a simple tone develops into a richer composite sound. Each active harmonic is generated as a sine wave and mixed at a reduced level.
Higher harmonics are gently reduced in level to keep the composite sound comfortable. Begin with a low system volume.
Harmonic Geometry
One full journey around the circle represents 360°. The fundamental completes one oscillation during that journey; the second harmonic completes two, the third completes three, and so on.
1 complete oscillation across 360° · 111 Hz
Active harmonics from Stage 3 remain more visible here. Select any harmonic to trace its geometry.
